Training For Your Three Peaks Challenge.
Often teams and individuals initially have every intention of training and getting fit for their challenge. Through the winter months, it's easy to see the miserable weather outside, and put off your training until spring - and when that comes you're too busy to find the time to get out there... Summer arrives, and you can only manage the odd hour or so down at your local gym, with perhaps a simple day walk with a few of the team.
Before you know it, the time has come to travel up to Fort William and get ready to tackle Ben Nevis. Your not too sure how fit everyone else is, but you've got brand new boots so you'll have a go and see what happens.... HUGE MISTAKE.
Imagine you've got the time off work, bought flights to Glasgow, picked up your rental minibus, paid for a bunkhouse or B&B, bought all of your food, and a few expensive bits of outdoor gear, and a GPS, told all your your friends about your 3 Peaks, got some sponsership for your favourite charity - and then the weather changes...
Ben Nevis is cold and wet, and blowing a hoolly. After just an hour of climbing, your legs are screaming, your lungs are bursting, you're cold and wet and miserable, you've already got a blister, and your waterproof jacket isn't waterproof. The guy at the back is 200 metres behind everyone else. What are you going to do?
Pack in and go home?
You need to start training for your challenge as soon as possible, and where possible, you should try to train together, as a team. Together you can help each other, give each other encouragement, find out how well you work together, see who's good at map reading, who's good at pacemaking, who needs to improve stamina and endurance, who needs to get fitter...
Are any of your team simply not up to it? Better to find out now rather than halfway up Scafell Pike at 3am in a blizzard.
Are your waterproofs up to the job? Did you carry enough food and water? Do your boots fit properly?

Merseyventure organise Three Peaks Challenge training days on Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon. These are free for Team Leaders entered into our own events, and half price for the rest of the team members. For other people, prices start from just £35 - your chance to climb with a qualified and experienced mountain guide, and to get some useful info and advice before your challenge comes around.
Good luck, stay safe out there...This page was last modified on 07 Oct 2009
